Advertising & Sponsorship Policy

How The Financial Compass distinguishes commercial content from independent editorial content.

Last updated: September 16, 2026

The Financial Compass may generate revenue through advertising, sponsorships, affiliate relationships, and other commercial arrangements.

These sources of revenue help support the development of our financial education, articles, research, calculators, tools, and other resources.

We believe readers should be able to distinguish independent editorial information from paid promotional content.

This policy explains how we approach advertising and sponsorships.

Our Core Principle

Advertising should be recognizable as advertising.

Sponsored material should not be presented in a way that causes readers to believe it is independent editorial content when it is actually commercial communication.

Where commercial content might otherwise be mistaken for editorial content, we aim to identify its commercial nature clearly.

Types of Commercial Content

The Financial Compass may display or publish several forms of commercial content.

These may include display advertisements, sponsored articles, sponsored guides, sponsored newsletters, sponsored sections, partner content, promotional placements, affiliate links, referral partnerships, sponsored videos, sponsored social media content, and sponsored tools or resources.

The format may evolve as the website develops.

Display Advertising

Display advertisements may appear within articles, between page sections, in sidebars, within category pages, in headers or footers, or through third-party advertising networks.

Where advertising is not immediately obvious from its format, appropriate labels may be used.

Examples include “Advertisement”, “Ad”, or another clear description appropriate to the placement.

Sponsored Content

Sponsored content is content for which a company or organization has provided financial or other material compensation.

Sponsored content should be clearly identified.

Possible labels may include “Sponsored”, “Sponsored Content”, “Paid Advertisement”, or another clear label that communicates the commercial relationship.

Where appropriate, the sponsoring organization may also be identified.

Native Advertising

Some advertising may be designed to visually fit within the surrounding website.

Because such advertising can resemble normal editorial material, additional care should be taken to ensure readers can recognize it as commercial content.

We aim not to design advertising in a manner intended to mislead readers into believing that paid promotional material is independent editorial coverage.

Placement of Disclosures

Where a disclosure is required to help readers understand the commercial nature of content, we aim to make it noticeable, understandable, appropriately prominent, and located close to the material it describes.

For sponsored articles, the disclosure should normally appear near the beginning of the content rather than being hidden only at the bottom of the page.

Sponsored Content and Editorial Standards

Payment for sponsored content does not give an advertiser unlimited control over statements presented as the views of The Financial Compass.

We aim to avoid publishing commercial claims that are materially misleading or unsupported.

Where sponsored content includes claims supplied by an advertiser, additional clarification or attribution may be appropriate.

Sponsored content should not be presented as independent research when it is not.

Advertising Does Not Equal Endorsement

The appearance of an advertisement on The Financial Compass does not automatically mean that we endorse the advertiser or believe its products or services are appropriate for every reader.

Readers should independently evaluate any advertised product or service.

This is particularly important for financial products that may involve investment risk, borrowing, fees, contractual commitments, insurance, credit, trading, financial data, or subscription costs.

Advertising and Editorial Coverage

The existence of an advertising relationship should not guarantee favorable editorial coverage, positive reviews, favorable rankings, suppression of legitimate criticism, or exclusion of competitors.

Likewise, companies should not need to advertise with The Financial Compass to be considered for independent editorial coverage.

Sponsored Research or Data

From time to time, a commercial organization may sponsor research, surveys, reports, tools, calculators, data analysis, or educational resources.

When sponsorship is material to understanding the content, we aim to disclose it.

Sponsorship does not necessarily mean the sponsor determined the conclusions.

Where a sponsor had substantial influence over methodology, conclusions, or presentation, that relationship should be made clear when relevant.

Sponsored Calculators and Tools

A company may potentially sponsor a calculator, tool, guide, or resource.

For example, a mortgage-related company could sponsor a mortgage education section.

If sponsorship exists, readers should be informed.

Sponsorship should not cause calculator results to be secretly manipulated to favor a sponsor.

Any calculator intended to provide neutral educational results should follow its stated methodology regardless of sponsorship.

Affiliate Content

Affiliate marketing is different from traditional advertising, although both involve commercial relationships.

When affiliate relationships exist, The Financial Compass may receive compensation following qualifying actions taken through links.

For more information, please read our Affiliate Disclosure.

Reviews and Testimonials

Any testimonial, endorsement, or user experience appearing in advertising or sponsored content should not be presented in a materially misleading manner.

Where compensation or another material relationship exists between an endorser and advertiser and that relationship is relevant to how readers may interpret the endorsement, appropriate disclosure should be made.

We do not intentionally present paid endorsements as independent consumer opinions.

Advertiser Claims

Advertisers are responsible for claims made in their advertising.

However, The Financial Compass reserves the right to reject, request changes to, or remove advertising that we believe may:

  • materially mislead readers
  • make unsupported financial claims
  • promise guaranteed investment returns
  • promote fraudulent activity
  • misrepresent risk
  • imitate editorial content deceptively
  • conflict materially with our publishing standards

Acceptance of advertising does not constitute independent verification of every advertiser claim.

Advertising Categories

We may decline advertising or sponsorship arrangements that we consider inappropriate for the publication or its readers.

Particular scrutiny may be applied to products or services involving high-risk investing, highly leveraged trading, speculative financial products, credit, debt relief, cryptocurrency, financial education programs, investment opportunities, or claims of unusually high financial returns.

We aim to avoid advertising that relies on deceptive or unrealistic financial promises.

Data and Privacy

Some third-party advertising providers may use cookies, pixels, or similar technologies in accordance with applicable privacy rules and their own policies.

Information regarding website data practices should be addressed in our Privacy Policy and, where applicable, cookie or consent settings.

Changes to Commercial Relationships

Advertising partners, affiliate programs, and sponsorship arrangements may change over time.

A commercial relationship that existed when an article was originally published may later end, or a new relationship may begin.

We aim to maintain appropriate disclosures based on the commercial relationship applicable to the content.

Our Commitment to Transparency

The Financial Compass intends to build long-term reader trust.

That requires readers to be able to distinguish between independent editorial information and paid commercial communication.

Advertising and sponsorship can support the publication without replacing our responsibility to communicate commercial relationships clearly.
